HUAWEI MateBook 14s, ‘MacBook Killer’ with Windows Flexibility | Droidcops
HUAWEI is well known as a smartphone maker, but it has also been selling laptops for some time. In fact, HUAWEI has a complete line of laptops if the comparison is price.
Starting from the HUAWEI MateBook D14, D15, to the Matebook X Pro flagship laptop, and now comes the latest model that fills another competitive price line with specifications that cannot be underestimated, namely the MateBook 14s.
One thing you can’t deny is that the HUAWEI MateBook 14s is an amazing laptop device. Based on 11th Gen Intel® Core™ processor with various variants of RAM and storage capacity.
Concise and elegant is probably the best way to summarize a design HUAWEI MateBook 14s. Moreover, we will summarize everything we got while using the HUAWEI MateBook 14s.
Table of Contents
Design
HUAWEI has packed a 14.2-inch display into a compact chassis measuring 313.82mm wide and 229.76mm deep. The MateBook 14s weighs 1.43kg, and there are lighter 14-inch laptops available, but the trade-off here is a solid build.
And the nice thing is, HUAWEI has armed the MateBook 14s with a MIL-STD certificate or IP rating.
The 14.2-inch display sits on fairly evenly sized bezels, providing a 3:2 aspect ratio which gives the screen a slightly higher height than usual.
HUAWEI managed to achieve a screen-to-body ratio of up to 90% for the MateBook 14s, which is impressive.
To unlock the screen, the power button doubles as a fingerprint sensor, so you just have to turn it on and it will unlock for you with the same press. If you prefer there is IR facial recognition too.
The keyboard feels very comfortable for typing long documents, while the touchpad feels large, responsive and accurate so there are no annoying problems.
You also get two USB-C ports, one of which doubles as a charging port for a laptop, a standard audio jack, and an HDMI port for you to connect to an external monitor or projector.
Screen
In terms of specifications, this laptop screen is really good for a 16 million laptop. This screen measures 14.2 inches with LTPS panel, the resolution is 2520 x 1680 pixels aka 2.5K.
HUAWEI made the MateBook 14s have a refresh rate of 90 Hz with 100% sRGB. It doesn’t stop there, in order to satisfy users, the MateBook screen is designed with a viewing angle of up to 178 degrees, and supports touchscreen features.
The screen of the MateBook 14s has a slightly matte finish and this helps quite a bit to reduce glare in bright environments although it’s certainly shinier than you might think.
Maximum brightness is also a decent 400 nits (again, on par with the MacBook Air), though you might still struggle to see the display if you’re using the device outside during the day.
It also acts as a reactive touchscreen and makes website scrolling easy.
It’s great for everything from streaming TV shows and movies to editing videos. You get an impressive level of detail and everything looks incredibly sharp.
HUAWEI promises an eye-catching display with TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light and Flicker-Free certification and other smart features that will adjust the screen according to your environment.
From the overall screen performance, we feel that the MateBook 14s delivers a screen that is as clear as the MacBook even adding other plus points such as a higher refresh rate.
Performance
HUAWEI MateBook 14s it basically has 2 variants. First with Intel® Evo™ platform powered by Intel® Core™ i7 processor, with 16GB LPDDR4x memory capacity and 1TB SSD NVMe PCIe storage that has been certified Intel Evo.
However, for the variant we tested this time, it was an 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-11300H processor, with 8GB LPDDR4x memory capacity and 512GB SSD NVMe PCIe storage.
The version that we use comes with speeds that reach 3226 MB per second for reading, and 2516 MB per second for writing.
Even so, we were able to run large spreadsheets using Chrome with multiple tabs and windows open without a problem. The presence of an Intel Iris Xᵉ graphics card adds an impressive impression to this latest device from HUAWEI.
Talking about the game, although I still feel hesitant to play with Red Dead Redemption 2, but we tried with some other games that are familiar.
We managed to run several games, from Minecraft to League of Legends without lags and very high framerates. Despite its wow capabilities, I’m sure you don’t want to use it as a gaming laptop specifically.
Please note that our actual display is set to 60Hz. The 90Hz scale depends on what app you’re using, so you won’t be running 90Hz all the time regardless of whether that’s what you set.
Other times we try to play the Valorant game, at low graphics settings and the lowest resolution. As a result, we were able to penetrate 120 – 140 fps in this game.
Meanwhile, for heavier games like Genshin Impact, the result is that we can only play at the default setting of 30fps, but smoothly.
If you want to play with the 60fps setting, you can, but we recommend activating Performance Mode by clicking the Fn + P button.
But with a note, this can only be done when the laptop is charged, and the battery capacity must be above 20%.
In essence, for an ultrabook laptop that is not intended for gaming at all, the HUAWEI MateBook 14s has a gaming performance that does not disappoint.
Camera No Longer Hidden
The HUAWEI MateBook 14s no longer carries a chin-up webcam design hidden inside the keyboard. Instead, HUAWEI embeds a secret camera mounted on the top bezel of the screen.
In this way, the camera’s viewing angle feels normal again. HUAWEI brings a camera with a resolution of 720p. Very comfortable to use for conference calls, with good light quality.
Complete Audio
Another fun thing comes from the four beautiful speakers inside the HUAWEI MateBook 14s thanks to HUAWEI Sound. This speaker is capable of producing full, powerful, and very loud sound.
HUAWEI has also added four built-in microphones that can capture sound from up to 5m away, complete with AI Noise Canceling to filter out ambient noise.
But a very special feature of this microphone is Personal Voice Enhancement which can make your voice sound clearer while eliminating distracting background noise, including the voices of other people.
It’s perfect to reduce the noise and noise of the surrounding environment when online meetings and online schools.
HUAWEI Share
There is another interesting point, if you have a HUAWEI phone or tablet, you can easily transfer files between devices by opening the phone screen on the laptop which allows to drag and drop files to the PC.
HUAWEI Share will also allow you to receive calls through your MateBook screen so you don’t have to switch between devices when your phone rings.
If you have a HUAWEI tablet, you can also easily expand the screen of the HUAWEI MateBook 14s, which means you can run multiple programs at once, using the same mouse and keyboard on both.
You can even drag files, folders, and windows between devices.
Battery Life
The battery life is more than enough to get you through the workday. The HUAWEI MateBook 14s was able to achieve a life span of up to 13 hours 23 minutes when we used it to play videos non-stop.
When the battery was depleted, we were able to fully charge the laptop in under two hours thanks to the 90W charging provided by HUAWEI.
The comparison is that in 35 minutes, we can still get four hours of battery life. In our opinion, this charging can be said to be very fast.
You can use any other laptop charger, regardless of brand as long as it’s USB-C, and it doesn’t interfere with charging speeds.
Mobile Apps Engine
One new and interesting additional feature of the HUAWEI MateBook 14s is the Mobile Apps Engine. This feature allows users to install and run mobile applications on laptops. Later, users can download the application from the HUAWEI PC AppGallery and run it.
Various applications that can be run ranging from mobile games, transportation applications and ordering food directly from a laptop without having to open a smartphone.
Conclusion
The HUAWEI MateBook 14s had a lot of things that took us by surprise during our tests. Especially from the performance sector which we didn’t expect to be able to play Genshin Impact smoothly.
Apart from that, the specifications offered are also able to match several ultrabook competitors in its class, including Apple products such as the MacBook.
With a 90 Hz screen character and Intel Iris X and its ability to embrace the HUAWEI product Ecosystem through HUAWEI Share, making it a complete package from an ultrabook that makes work more efficient.
Even for multitasking, the HUAWEI MateBook 14s ultrabook laptop is undeniably capable.
