CCTV is a security camera commonly used in homes, shops, and offices. CCTV technology has continued to develop over the years, because of its very functional nature to catch unwanted events such as theft and so on.

CCTV cameras can be purchased in the market at various prices, ranging from cheap ones to those that are quite draining. Not to mention, you need a special monitor to access the CCTV cameras installed at home.

To save on the cost of purchasing a CCTV camera, you can take advantage of an old, unused smartphone and turn it into a CCTV camera.

How to turn an old smartphone into a CCTV

To turn an old smartphone into a CCTV or security camera, you just need to follow these 3 steps.

Step 1: Install Security Camera App

Turn your smartphone into CCTV Alfred

First of all, you have to download a security camera support application, there are many choices of applications that you can get in the App Store or Play Store. One of the options is Alfred app.

The Alfred app is free to use and provides services for motion detection with alerts, free cloud storage, two-way audio, and front and rear camera settings.

In addition, Alfred also provides several additional features such as viewing and recording at a higher resolution, zoom capability, ad removal, and 30 days of cloud storage that you can get in Alfred Premium.

  1. Download Alfred (Android, iOS) on any old and new smartphone or tablet you want to use. Your new smartphone acts as a monitoring monitor.
  2. On new phones, swipe through the introduction and select “Start” then Select “Viewer” and “Next”
  3. Once you get to the sign in page, click “sign in with Google” and sign in with your Google account.
  4. On older smartphones, repeat the same steps, but don’t select “Viewer”, select “Camera” as this will work as your CCTV camera, then make sure to log into the same Google account.

Once both smartphones are in Alfred, you pretty much complete the setup. Alfred has simplified the camera options to include only a few settings.

If you’re using an iOS device, you can only turn on motion detection, choose between the front and rear cameras, and turn audio on or off.

Whereas, on Android devices, you have those options and you can also enable continuous focus, have Alfred automatically unlock again if the phone reboots, set the resolution, and enable passcode lock.

Step 2: Set the CCTV Location

Once your stream is up and running, you need to set up and position the camera. Focus on the main entry point to your home, backyard, or where you keep valuables.

Step 3: Install and Activate Camera

To mount or position the camera, a small smartphone tripod such as a gorilla pod or mini tripod will help you position the camera in an inconspicuous place.

Streaming this video may be very power-intensive, because the smartphone will be active 24/7. Well, so that the smartphone does not turn off in the first few hours, you need to place it near a power source. A 3cm Micro-USB or Lightning cable will give you more flexibility where you put it.

Well, that’s at the event of turning your used cellphone into a CCTV camera. With this, you don’t have to throw away your old smartphone. Good luck!
